Many of the volunteer efforts I have led and participated in center on inviting and supporting undergraduate/graduate students’ more central participation in astronomy and physics communities (or include that as one of several goals). You can learn more about these initiatives by visiting the pages linked to each brief description.
At Texas State University broadly…
- I am the co-PI on a 5-year initiative to support instructional improvements and institutional changes for the College of Science and Engineering.
In the Texas State University physics department…
- I was the interim director of the Physics Learning Assistant program in Fall 2019 and have been the co-director since Spring 2020.
- I have participated in meetings of the Texas State Society of Women in Physics, and was the interim faculty advisor for the organization in Fall 2019-Spring 2020.
- I have participated in meetings of the the Texas State Astronomy Club.
- I have given a talk for the Texas State University Society of Physics Students.
In the broader physics/astronomy community…
- I am a member-at-large on the APS Group on Physics Education Research (GPER) Executive Committee (2022-2023).
- I was a volunteer member of the 2021 APS National Mentoring Community programming committee.
- I was a member of the advisory board for the West Virginia University Center for Gravitational Waves and Cosmology.
- I was a member of the Committee for the Status of Women in Astronomy from 2018-2019.
- I served on the AAS Education Task force in 2016, where I helped to develop this set of (now approved) recommendations for the AAS.
- I compiled and shared advice about how to pursue an Astronomy Education Research PhD. The full three-part article can be found on the AstroBetter blog, and a shorter version was published in the October 2015 PERCoGs newsletter.
- I was an author for Astrobites, a graduate-student led website that summarizes current astrophysical research and provides career advice at a level appropriate for undergraduate physical science majors, from 2012-2013.
In the University of Maryland astronomy department…
- I started and initially led the Astronomy Gentleladies Network (AGN), a mentoring and support group for undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs.
- I co-organized the Better Astronomy for a New Generation (BANG) seminar series from Fall 2015-Spring 2016.
- I served on the Equity & Inclusion committee from Fall 2015-Spring 2016, where we primarily focused on improving the graduate admissions process by adapting resources from the Fisk-Vanderbilt Bridge Program, as well as helping the department to consider other emergent issues at that time such as the increased attention to sexual harassment in the astronomy community.
